Veterans Transportation is one of three companies/contractors which provide THE RIDE service for customers living
in the 60 cities and towns of the MBTA service area. Each company serves Boston directly. Additionally, each
contractor provides service for a particular service area. The contractor is responsible for providing all trips
within their service area and for all trips to and from their service area to Boston. The VTS provides THE RIDE
service to passengers living in the Northwest Service Area - Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Brookline, Burlington,
Cambridge Concord, Lexington, Lincoln, Medford, Newton, Somerville Waltham, Watertown, Weston, Wilmington,
Winchester, and Woburn.
THE RIDE is administered by the MBTA’s Office for Transportation Access (OTA), and is operated in compliance with
the federal government’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). THE RIDE service operates seven days a week
(including holidays) with first pick up generally from 5:00 AM and ending at 1:00 AM. It is a shared-ride service.
Eligibility for THE RIDE program is ultimately determined by the MBTA following ADA guidelines. A licensed/certified
human services or health care provider supplies specific, detailed responses to a questionnaire which is used to
identify the functional limitations and barriers which prevent passengers from independently using MBTA fixed route
services buses, subway trains, and trolleys (not including commuter rail and boat) some or all of the time.
